How to Choose a Whey Protein in India: A Doctor-Led Buying Guide

Most whey protein buying decisions in India come down to three things: the form of whey, what the label actually discloses, and whether the product has been tested by someone other than the manufacturer. Price per kilogram is the wrong first question. A cheaper tub delivering 60% protein by weight costs more per gram of protein than a pricier one delivering 85%, and blends that hide their ratios behind the phrase "proprietary blend" make that calculation impossible on purpose. This guide walks through what each label term means, which ones are meaningful and which are marketing, and how to work out the only price that matters — cost per gram of protein. It is written for the Indian market, where adulteration and mislabelling have been documented problems, so verification matters more than it might elsewhere.

Isolate, concentrate or hydrolysate — what is the difference?

Whey concentrate is the least filtered. Typically 70–80% protein by weight, with the remainder lactose and fat. Cheapest per kilogram, and fine if you digest lactose comfortably.

Whey isolate is filtered further, usually to 90% protein or above, removing most lactose and fat. Costs more per kilogram but delivers more protein per gram, and is easier on digestion for people who feel heavy or bloated after concentrate.

Whey hydrolysate is pre-broken into shorter peptide chains. Absorbed marginally faster, considerably more expensive, and for most people not worth the premium.

For the majority of buyers the real choice is concentrate versus isolate, and it turns on digestion and cost per gram rather than on any dramatic difference in results.

How do you calculate cost per gram of protein?

This is the number that matters, and almost no one advertises it.

Cost per gram = price ÷ (servings × protein per serving)

A 1 kg tub at Rs 2,400 with 30 servings of 24 g gives 720 g of protein — Rs 3.33 per gram. A 1 kg tub at Rs 2,000 with 33 servings of 18 g gives 594 g — Rs 3.37 per gram. The "cheaper" tub is fractionally more expensive per gram of the thing you are actually buying.

Do this calculation before comparing anything else. It frequently reverses the apparent ranking.

What should a good label disclose?

  • Protein per serving in grams, and the serving size in grams
  • The specific whey form — isolate, concentrate or a stated blend ratio
  • A full amino acid profile, ideally including leucine content
  • An FSSAI licence number, mandatory for food products sold in India
  • Batch number and expiry date
  • Complete ingredient list including sweeteners and flavourings

Treat "proprietary blend" as a warning. It means the manufacturer will not tell you the ratio of ingredients. There is no benefit to you in that opacity.

What is protein spiking, and how do you spot it?

Protein content is often measured by nitrogen content. Cheap nitrogen-rich compounds — free amino acids such as glycine and taurine, or in serious cases melamine — can inflate the measured protein figure without adding usable protein.

Warning signs: added free amino acids listed separately from the protein source, a price substantially below the market norm, and a total amino acid profile that does not reconcile with the claimed protein content.

This is not theoretical in the Indian market. It is the main argument for buying from a source willing to publish third-party test results.

Does flavour and sweetener choice matter?

For adherence, yes. The best protein is the one you will keep taking, and a flavour you dislike gets abandoned.

On sweeteners: sucralose and stevia are both widely used and permitted. Some people report bloating with sugar alcohols such as maltitol. If you are sensitive, check for those specifically.

Single-serve sachets are worth considering over tubs if you travel, or if you have found that an open tub goes stale before you finish it.

How much do you actually need?

The ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition sets the Recommended Dietary Allowance at 0.83 g per kg of body weight per day for Indian adults. Requirements rise with resistance training, pregnancy, breastfeeding, recovery from illness, and age.

Note that this is total daily protein, not protein from supplements. If you already eat dal, curd, paneer and eggs, your supplement only needs to cover the shortfall. Buying more than you need is simply expensive.

Who should not use whey?

People with a milk protein allergy should avoid whey entirely — this is distinct from lactose intolerance. Those with lactose intolerance usually tolerate isolate better than concentrate, since most lactose is filtered out.

Anyone with kidney disease should have protein intake directed by their doctor rather than self-managed. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before adding any supplement.

A short checklist before you buy

  1. Calculate cost per gram of protein, not per kilogram
  2. Confirm the whey form is stated explicitly
  3. Check for an FSSAI licence number on the pack
  4. Reject anything relying on "proprietary blend"
  5. Look for a published amino acid profile
  6. Check the expiry date and buy a size you will finish
  7. Prefer brands that publish third-party test results
