Do Hair Supplements Really Work? The Science Behind Stronger, Healthier Hair

Hair supplements work when hair loss is caused by a nutritional deficiency, and largely do not when it is not. That is the honest answer, and it is more useful than the one most supplement pages give. Hair follicles are among the most metabolically demanding tissues in the body, so when you are short of iron, protein or key micronutrients, hair is one of the first things the body deprioritises. Correct the shortfall and hair generally recovers. But if your hair loss is driven by genetics, thyroid disease, hormonal change or a scalp condition, no supplement addresses the underlying cause. The most useful thing you can do before buying anything is find out which situation you are in. A blood test measuring ferritin, thyroid function and vitamin D costs little and answers the question directly.

Do hair supplements actually work?

It depends entirely on why your hair is falling.

Where they help: hair loss caused by iron deficiency, protein shortfall or a documented micronutrient deficiency. Here supplementation corrects the actual cause, and hair typically improves over several months.

Where they do not: androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness), untreated thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions such as alopecia areata, scarring alopecias, and hair loss from medication. These need medical treatment, and a supplement taken instead of seeing a doctor simply delays it.

What does the evidence say about biotin?

Biotin is the most heavily marketed ingredient in hair supplements, and the evidence for it is weaker than the marketing suggests.

Systematic reviews are consistent: there are no studies demonstrating that biotin supplementation benefits hair growth in healthy individuals with adequate biotin levels. Where biotin does help is in genuine deficiency — uncommon on a balanced diet, but it occurs with biotinidase deficiency, medications such as isotretinoin and valproic acid, prolonged parenteral nutrition, and after bowel resection.

We would rather tell you that than sell you a claim the literature does not support.

One practical warning: high-dose biotin interferes with several common laboratory tests, including thyroid and cardiac troponin assays, and can produce misleading results. Tell your doctor if you are taking it before any blood test.

What about iron and ferritin?

Here the evidence is genuinely stronger. Iron deficiency has a documented association with telogen effluvium, the diffuse shedding many women experience.

A 2025 case-control study found mean serum ferritin significantly lower in women with telogen effluvium (24.30 ng/mL) than in controls (44.78 ng/mL). A systematic review and meta-analysis reached a similar conclusion, while noting that the exact ferritin threshold and the mechanism by which iron affects the hair cycle both remain debated.

Given that 57% of Indian women aged 15–49 are anaemic according to NFHS-5, iron status is worth checking before anything else if you are losing hair.

Why is my hair falling out?

  • Telogen effluvium — diffuse shedding triggered by illness, surgery, childbirth, crash dieting or severe stress, typically appearing two to three months after the trigger
  • Iron deficiency — particularly common in menstruating women
  • Thyroid disorders — both underactive and overactive
  • Androgenetic alopecia — genetic, progressive, the most common cause of long-term loss
  • Protein deficiency — hair is largely keratin, a protein
  • PCOS and other hormonal conditions
  • Scalp conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis or fungal infection

When should you see a doctor instead?

See a doctor rather than reaching for a supplement if your hair loss is sudden, patchy rather than diffuse, accompanied by scalp pain, itching or scaling, or comes with other symptoms such as fatigue, weight change, irregular periods or cold intolerance. Patchy loss can indicate alopecia areata or a fungal infection, neither of which responds to nutrition.

How long before you see results?

Hair grows in cycles, and the cycle is slow. Realistically: reduced shedding at around 6–8 weeks, improved texture at 3 months, visible new growth at 4–6 months.

Anyone promising results in two weeks is selling something. Consistency over three months matters far more than dosage, which is why a supplement you will actually keep taking beats a stronger one you abandon.
